You don’t need to complete every set of cards, just read the decription of each deck to work out where is best to start. The Conversation Starter cards are a great ice breaker, even if your child knows exactly what they want to do. You can come back and complete a different set at any time.

Each set of cards takes about 20 minutes, if you discuss each question with your child as you go through them. Why not complete a set while the dinner’s cooking or when you’re on a journey together somewhere.

Conversation Starter

If you need some help getting a career conversation started, then this is the set of cards for you.

It will prompt you to share stories about your schooling, any jobs you may have held and your interests. Talking about your experiences in work or education will help your child think about theirs and open up to a conversation.

Aspiration Finder

This is a great tool to help your child define the working life they’d like to have. Start here if your child doesn’t know what they’d like to do when they’re older.

This deck encourages them to share their hopes, likes and dislikes in a fun and interactive way. Being honest and open about what they’re interested in will help them find a career that motivates them and to plan the steps that will take them there.

Career Detective

Start with this tool if your child has given you some initial clues about what they’d like to do.

You can work through what interests them about different careers and sectors and find out whether their skills and interests match up. In your personalised report you’ll be directed to websites that have useful information on what’s involved in different sectors and occupations.

Career Jigsaw

If your child has a pretty clear idea of what they want to do, start with this deck of cards.

Together you can work through a series of topics and questions that will help to bring more structure to their ideas. This deck also guides you and your child on how to gather as much advice as possible to make informed career decisions.

Career Planner

Start with this deck if your child has made some decisions about their job or career. It is ideal for children aged 14+.

It contains some great tips on how to prepare for interviews, how to decide if a company is the right organisation to work for and helps you confirm with your child that they’ve made the right decision about their chosen career.
