Success Story

Meet Abraham Mathews

Location and age: Bristol, 22
Job title: Associate Design Engineer

I joined GKN in 2021 through a degree apprenticeship programme and completed my apprenticeship in September 2025. Since then, I’ve moved into a full-time engineering role, which felt like a natural progression because by the end of my apprenticeship I was already taking on the same level of responsibility.

I’d been interested in aviation and aerospace from a young age. Growing up near Heathrow Airport in West London, I was fascinated by aircraft and the industry around them. The apprenticeship route stood out to me after school because it combined that passion for aerospace with the opportunity to gain hands-on engineering experience while also working towards a degree.
